Let it Rain

January 25, 2010

Dear readers, an introduction is in order.  My name is Katie Delwiche, and I am first and foremost a gardener.  I pulled beets and carrots with grandpa when I was a girl–rinsed them in a brown bucket, swirling the dirt off.  I grew up to become a gardener, a mother, an herbalist (though all these pursuits truly take many years).  In other words, I do my fair share of hosing down.  (This is going to have its very own post, trust me.)

Dirt cred, check.

It’s hard to miss the Greater Rinse Off that is happening now.  (And I thought yesterday was rainy!) Here in California El Nino is doing a uniformly good job of sprinkling and dumping.  No pant leg is spared.  I keep making cups of hot tea to stave off the growing sense of being washed downhill.  Despite the cabin fever, my overwhelming emotion is one of relief.  A strong hard rain is actually pouring down, soaking the earth.   It’s coming so fast that little rivers are being formed, covering the concrete highways.  You can’t stop the water–it runs where it wants to making mud, leaks, puddles and a myriad of other inconveniences large and small.

For the record, I don’t like the inconveniences.  I feel sad for the folks wet up to their knees and dearly worry about them crossing the streets, darting in front of cars.  While everything is scrambling for shelter, I (who have sworn off organized religion) bless my car over and over again.   My luxurious pick up truck is a dry, mobile shelter that I am grateful for.  Anyone need a ride?

How about a cup of tea?  Which brings me to my future post…the Birth of Tea–one woman’s awkward story of creating a whole bunch of herbal teas to share with the world.   I can’t promise that you’ll find it compelling, but I can promise that you’ll find it tasty.

For now, I’ll leave you with this lovely photograph of a naked California Buckeye tree in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.  And the beautiful Manzanita blossom too.

Stay dry.

(Many thanks to Nate for these beautiful photographs…)
